Engagement rate calculator for Instagram and YouTube

Look up a creator and get their engagement rate from their recent posts, read live, with the sum written out.

Instagram Business and Creator accounts. We read their recent posts live and work out the rate from their likes and comments.

How the rate is worked out

(average likes + average comments) ÷ followers × 100

1,140average likes, last 12 posts
+ 58average comments
1.9%of 62,400 followers (example)
  1. Take recent posts. Use the last 10 to 12 posts, the same set for every number. One viral post or one flop is not the account.
  2. Average the engagements. Add likes and comments, then divide by the number of posts.
  3. Divide, then multiply by 100. Divide by followers for the rate by followers, or by views for the rate by views.
  4. Read it in context. A rate means little without the account’s size and platform. Compare like with like.

What an engagement rate does not tell you

  • Who the audience is. Two accounts can post the same rate to very different people, in different countries, with different tastes.
  • Whether the activity is organic. Engagement groups and bought likes raise a rate without raising interest.
  • How many people a post reaches. That is the median views of recent posts, what we call Real Reach, and it can be a tenth of the follower count.
  • Posts that hide likes. Instagram lets creators hide like counts, so an average over visible posts can understate the account.
  • What a post is worth to your store. That takes your conversion rate and order value, which the influencer ROI calculator works out.

Frequently asked questions

How do you calculate engagement rate?

Add up the likes and comments on a creator’s recent posts, divide by the number of posts to get the average per post, then divide that by their followers and multiply by 100. The calculator reads a creator’s recent posts, does this for you and prints the sum so you can check it.

What is the difference between engagement rate by followers and by views?

By followers asks how much of the whole audience acted on a post. By views asks how many of the people who actually watched acted. The first falls as an account grows, because a post reaches a smaller share of a bigger audience; the second is the fairer read for short video. Compare creators on the same one.

What is a good engagement rate?

It depends on account size and platform, so a single target such as 3% misleads. Our guide to what a good engagement rate is has medians by follower tier from the Real Reach Report, and how to read them.

Does the calculator look up any account?

Any YouTube channel, and any Instagram Business or Creator account. We read their recent posts live when you look them up and work the rate out from those likes and comments. Instagram does not open personal accounts to anyone, and TikTok does not open profiles to lookups, so for those you can type the numbers yourself.

Is it free, and is anything stored?

It is free with no account and no email. A handle you look up goes to our server to be read, and because a handle is public information it may be added to our creator catalogue. Numbers you type yourself never leave your browser.

Why does another tool show a different engagement rate for the same account?

Tools differ on which posts they use, whether they take an average or a median, whether they divide by followers or views, and how they treat posts that hide their likes. Set the posts and the denominator the same and the numbers should match.

Does a high engagement rate mean a creator will sell my product?

No. It shows an audience is active. It does not show how many people a post reaches, whether they match your customers, or what a post is worth to your store. The influencer ROI calculator takes it from there, with your store’s own conversion rate and order value.
